How to Decorate a Small Bedroom
How to decorate a small bedroom does not require the services of a professional decorator. You can enhance a small bedroom to make it feel spacious and airy in two ways. Avoid cluttering the space and to use some innovative and unique decorating tricks. If you are moving into a new home or apartment and have a small bedroom to decorate, the first thing that you should do is measure the space you have to use. This will help you to know if the furniture you have will fit into the bedroom and give it a cluttered look or a spacious look. If you have a large dresser, you may have to sell it and get something smaller or get a chest of drawers. You also need to measure your bed and make sure that it does not take up too much of the bedroom space.
The first lesson in how to decorate a small bedroom is to choose the right colors, which should be light and neutral. Save the darker paint for a larger room because they can make the room seem even smaller and drab. Use pastels like eggshell yellow, sea green, lavender, light blue, and peach. If you are artistic or know someone that is, have them paint a mural on one wall such as a sea scene, an aquarium with brightly colored fishes, some flowers, etc. You could also use stencil art. Even though you are using light airy pastel colors one wall could be just a shade darker to add more dimension to the room. You could also paint one wall a pastel color and the other three walls white or off white.
Although you might love to have a queen or king size bed, you may have to settle for a full size bed, even a twin if you are single. While learning how to decorate a small bedroom you need to remember that the bed takes up the most space in the bedroom. You do not want to have a bed that does not allow any other furniture to fit into the room. You can also get a bed that has drawers underneath to give you more storage without taking up more space. Choose a thin metal frame because they give an illusion of spaciousness with visual wall space. Instead of using a wide dresser opt for a tall chest of drawers. You will still have drawer space but no top space. To remedy this you can get a small nightstand to put beside the bed.
3. Curtains or drapes
Choose your window coverings to match the colors of the walls in order to complement the look. Having the right curtains or drapes will add style to the room. There are net curtains, sheer curtain, etc. When using sheer curtains you could also install blinds you can close to keep out the light instead of using heavy draperies or curtains.
The lighting in a small bedroom should illuminate every corner of the room. You want to make sure that the room appears tranquil so look for lighting that has a soft glow. Choose lighter wattage bulbs for your light fixtures. If you have a small lamp on your nightstand, make sure that bulb is bright enough for you to read by in bed. Do not choose opaque lampshades as they can make a room look darker.
Near the door, you could hang a full-length mirror so you can check your appearance before leaving. You could also place a wide mirror above your headboard. If you want, you can make a design out of several smaller mirrors instead of using one large one. Look for decorative mirrors in different frames such as wooden frames and in different sizes like squares, round, or triangle. Choose mirrors that have sleek simple frames. If you want to hang pictures or art on the walls keep them small to medium size because if they are very large it could make the room seem smaller and more focused on the picture or painting. If you have books or other things to put on shelves use open shelves to make the bedroom seem larger. In unused corners put in shelves or a corner cabinet You can even have a wall-mounted television to give your bedroom a sophisticated look.
Carpet feels great on the feet during the winter months but it can make the bedroom appear smaller. Instead, put in laminated floor that resembles hardwood flooring and use a few scatter rugs. When using laminated flooring look for light colored flooring to help create visual space in the room.
